Recycle your wedding dress

A wedding day is very special; a day one remembers for the rest of their lives. It is all the more special for a bride because she dreams of spending that day in the most exquisite, extravagant dress. Every bride remembers what she wore on her wedding day and how that dress made her feel. But along with the beauty of the dress also comes the price tag. Wedding dresses are expensive, and often a huge chunk of the wedding budget is spent on the bridal dress itself. This can be quite a waste if the dress is worn just once and then stored away for decades. When making bridal dresses, I often advise the bride to make something she can reuse. After all, why should your gorgeous wedding dress be worn just once! Give it a new life. Here are a few ideas on how to reclaim the dress. Cut it! Cut off the length of your dress to make it a day wear outfit, or even a cocktail dress. You can probably cut off elements from the dress, like sleeves or a train, to give it a whole new l...

How to store your winter clothing

Winter is officially over in Goa. Most of us have already turned to our comfy cottons and linens. Those of you who haven’t already tucked away your winter clothing are probably wondering how to do it in the best way possible so your precious clothes are still in pristine condition for the next winter season. Here are a few points to remember while storing various winter items. Woollens: Clean all your garments thoroughly before storing them away. Any stains left on clothing will only darken and become worse during storage. Besides, food stains and body oils attract moths and other pests. Dust and dirt can dull the appearance of your woollens. Hence, brush woollen clothes lengthwise to remove surface soil that could become stains later. Most clothing just needs to be washed normally or dry cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions. Woven garments can be hung on shaped or padded coat hangers. Utilize all of the extra hanging loops to keep t...

Layering ideas for winter (Part II)

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” – John Steinbeck. Winters are reminiscent of flamboyant weddings, time spent with loved ones, smoky barbeques, sipping on steamy hot chocolate, eating to your heart’s content knowing that your layers of clothing will do their best at camouflaging any tell-tale signs, and most of all the sheer enjoyment of dressing up in almost anything, any texture or colour. Winter is a great time to pull out whatever is in your wardrobe, mix and match and make a fashion statement. Layering is one way to stay warm and look stylish at the same time. Last time we discussed how to layer with different types of jackets. We do not always need jackets to create layering, especially for our Goan weather. Other items of clothing will also do the needful, and this is how. Button up shirt: A button up is a great way to keep warm without seeming too bulky. It also is a good replacement for a cardigan or sweater which...

Layering ideas for winter (Part I)

I love winter. Not only because it’s a respite from the sweaty hot months that predominate our country, but also because it’s the best time to experiment with our clothing and style. For me, dressing for cold winter days is all about figuring out how to stay warm and look stylish at the same time. I can make use of almost everything that is available in my wardrobe and have fun with it. It’s also a time I can wear my silks since silks are a bit uncomfortable to wear in the hotter months. Unfortunately, in Goa we do not have extreme temperatures like the Northern parts of India. So our dressing almost remains constant all through the year. However, the evenings can be pretty chilly and we may feel the need for some light layering. Layering is all about pairing different kinds of clothes together to create one cosy, bundled up, thrown-together look that seems effortless yet very fashionable. In theory, it’s pretty simple – add a cardigan over a tank top, or pair a dress wit...
